Our Transamerica story started in the US over 120 years ago
The origin of Transamerica Life Bermuda traces back to 1904 when a young entrepreneur, A.P. Giannini, established a community bank in San Francisco in the United States (US) to serve small businesses and farmers. In 1928 the bank became Transamerica Corporation and was further renamed as Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company (Transamerica OLIC) in 1930 after acquiring Occidental Life Insurance.
We set foot in Asia over 90 years ago
Three years later in 1933, Transamerica OLIC opened its first Asia sales office in China’s bustling city of Shanghai. With the outbreak of World War II, Transamerica OLIC was forced to temporarily close its China offices in 1941, which were re-established in 1947 and started to conduct businesses in Hong Kong, serving customers also in Asia since then.
Becoming part of Aegon to accelerate growth
After decades of expansion, in 1999 Transamerica OLIC became part of Aegon, an international financial services holding company with a portfolio of market-leading businesses offering investment, protection, and retirement solutions. Transamerica OLIC was renamed as Transamerica Life Insurance Company (Transamerica), and continued to grow and expand amid market diversification leveraging the strong foundation and expertise of Aegon.
Transamerica Life Bermuda emerges as the HNW life insurance specialist
As wealth needs evolved globally, Transamerica recognised the growing demand among HNW customers for insurance solutions. In 2005, Transamerica Life (Bermuda) Ltd. (Transamerica Life Bermuda) was incorporated in Bermuda to provide life insurance solutions for HNW customers. A year later in 2006, its rebranded Hong Kong office and a new Singapore branch were opened. More recently in 2025, the company expanded its footprint by opening a representative office in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Today, with a presence in Bermuda, Hong Kong, Singapore and the DIFC, and supported by an extensive network of distribution partners, Transamerica Life Bermuda is committed to helping HNW individuals and families achieve financial security and safeguard their wealth for future generations.
